Save Our Ryde Schools

Recently, local Liberal MP Victor Dominello announced his plan to close two schools in Ryde; Marsden High and Meadowbank Public.

This plan is ridiculous beyond belief.

Ryde needs more schools, not closed schools. Please sign and share my petition below.

Please also share this video to raise awareness.

The Hon. Victor Dominello MP

Member for Ryde

Dear Mr Dominello,

Your decision to close Marsden High School and Meadowbank primary is short-sighted in the extreme. I oppose your decision and ask that you immediately over-turn it.

Ryde has been targeted by the State Government with more and more development. The number of children aged five to 19 in Ryde will grow by more than 51 per cent over 20 years to at least 27,800 in 2036, according to NSW Department of Planning projections.

We need more schools in Ryde, not closed schools.

Apart for the need for more schools, there is too much development in the Riverside Ryde area!. Closing Meadowbank Public School can only mean future development site! It is inconceivable that this site will remain a park when the school is closed, even though higher population density means more parks are required!. Already the limited parks are full with residents enjoying the outdoors – you only need to go for a walk along the riverside on a warm evening to find masses of residents enjoying the outdoors (Example the dance groups at Ryde Wharf). In conclusion I do not believe that “Prime Real Estate” (public school site once closed) will remain a park despite current plans. For example – Look at Ryde Aquatic Centre site – land given to the public now run by profit driven leisure centre operators.

It is ludicrous to move Marsden High School given the probable influx of students from the projected 18500+ residents from the Melrose Park developments. Also with the current identified trade skills shortages will Meadowbank TAFE be able to provide sufficient learning space to cater for increased trade requirements in addition to a primary and high school with green space to play in? I don’t think so!!

It is an unbelievable “Development of Buildings” in Ryde Area. Due to this population growth, more number of schools would be definitely required in the forth coming years. Therefore it is not advisable to close the Local Schools and sell the Public Property to Private Companies.

Co-locating 5 year olds with 1500+ high school and TAFE students is madness. It is education policy on the run and shows a very low level of care for students, teachers and the community.

Meadowbank Public must to be retained for at least K-2 students. It does not make sense to turn the school site into open space- just because the local government forgot to put space aside with the approval of the adjacent apartment overdevelopments!
